For home owners, security is a very important issue. While everyone has locks on doors and windows, there is a larger range of options available for homeowners to protect their possession. If you are the victim of burglary, it is easy to replace items such as the TVs and stereos, but the feeling of security often takes a while to get back. Securing a garage or out building is just as important as you home. If you store valuable tools, machinery or your car(s) in a garage, it can be as attractive to burglars as your home. Getting a secure garage door is paramount for security. The same guidelines apply for windows and doors, but as garage doors tend to be more practical, larger locking mechanisms are often used. For some out buildings where valuable items are stored, such workshops, security shutters can be used. These offer high levels of protection and provide a great deterrence.

A side point to add for home security is web security. Many people have wireless networks in their homes for numerous devices, but if it is not password protected, you run the risk of attack. People can access personal information which can be used for many purposes. A simple password encryption is an easy way to increase the security of your personal data.

Although not for everyone, carpet is still a viable choice.

From carpets to tiling, you have a wide range of products that each have their own pros and cons, and it is completely down to your requirements and preferences as to which you eventually pick. • Carpeting – this is seen as the worst choice for bathrooms, as the warm, moist conditions can turn the carpet into a soggy mess. On the plus side, the bathroom floor is soft and warm in the morning, when compared to the other types of flooring that are available!

• Vinyl Tiles/Sheet Vinyl – as a cheap and easily installed flooring solution, you can’t go wrong with vinyl. You can lay an entire floor in a weekend, and with the great price you won’t have to break the bank either. With the tile option there is the chance that over time they will start to come up, but due to their price you can easily replace any damaged areas. Sheet vinyl doesn’t have this problem, but is a little trickier to lay; and as it is vinyl it is not exactly the most luxurious floor to have.

• Ceramic Tiles – an excellent choice, these tiles are reasonably priced, durable and stylish. You can get a wide range of ceramic tiles to suit your exact taste, so get to your local DIY store and see what they have on offer! The only problems are that ceramic tiles can be slippery when wet and they can be a bit chilly, but this can be helped by laying textured tiles and installing underfloor heating.
  

  Stone flooring is expensive, but rightly so!

• Stone Tiles – an extremely luxurious choice, stone tiling is seen as the very best flooring solution. Stone flooring will last a long, long time and can resist anything that is thrown at it, meaning that although the initial outlay may be fairly high you can be sure that it will last for many years to come. As with ceramic tiles, there is the fact that stone flooring can be quite cold, but this is not too big a problem when you consider the fantastic look and feel of a real stone floor.

• Engineered Wood Flooring – this is basically a layer of real wood on top of a plywood base, which means it has the benefits of both laminate and real wood, but without the susceptibility to water that plagues the real wood flooring. The price is more reasonable than real wood flooring too, so this is probably the best choice if you are looking for wooden flooring in your bathroom.

• Real Wood Flooring – this is the real deal. Real wood has a great texture and is warm compared to tiling, and on top of that it looks great too. The downside to this is that moisture can damage it quite easily, and if it is not sealed correctly it will lead to problems down the line.
  

  Laminate flooring is hard wearing and reasonably priced.

• Laminate Flooring – these planks are basically just a picture of real wood covered in resin and backed with woodchip, but they do a surprisingly good job. Laminate is reasonably priced and easy to fit, you can even do it yourself if you don’t want to spend extra money bringing someone else in! Although they are water resistant and usually guaranteed for 5 years or more, even in a bathroom environment, if water finds its way to the base it can cause a lot of problems and require a complete refit of the laminate.

As with home improvements, sometimes you just want to DIY! The difference between putting up a shelf and taking on a complex plumbing system is huge, however, and so only the most basic of plumbing jobs should be attempted by someone without the proper training and qualifications. There are plenty of resources online that offer advice and knowledge on basic plumbing jobs, and it is highly recommended that you read through these thoroughly before starting any project.

DIY plumbing ranges from unblocking a sink to installing a toilet, but obviously the amount of knowledge required for these two tasks is wildly different so if you feel as though you may not be able to carry out the job from start to finish; don’t hesitate to contact the experts. • Make sure you wear gloves suitable for the job you are undertaking, for example wearing rubber gloves if you may come into contact with chemicals, or leather gloves for protecting your hands while soldering.
• Wear a long sleeved top as well as trousers that protect you from any splashes.

• Don’t use a tool you have to hand as a substitute for the proper tool. A wrench is not a hammer, nor is a screwdriver a chisel! Using tools in this way increases the likelihood of accidents happening, as well as endangering your project completely.
• Although it might seem obvious, have all relevant emergency numbers to hand, just in case of any problems that might arise. It always pays to be prepared!

If you do not meet any of the above requirements then you will need planning permission before you go ahead and start development. If this is the case, then before going to your council for planning permission, I would suggest talking to your neighbours first to let them know what you are planning. Take drawings and blueprints and some sample pictures of what they can expect to see as this will help ease their minds and make the process of gaining permission less complicated – any appeals lodged against you will obviously have to be taken into account by the planning authorities.

Chances are nothing in your home gets more use than your carpets. Constantly walked on by you and your family, it’s no surprise that carpets can become dull and damaged over time.
